Desk all day? The chair is fine. The stillness isn't.
Eight hours of almost not moving is a quiet athletic event. What helps, in order.
Move before you optimize. Every 30 to 45 minutes, one or two minutes on your feet; pair it with water. Every 20 minutes, 20 seconds looking far away. Screens don't wreck eyes; they park them at one distance.
Six moves that fit a chair:
- Chin tucks: head straight back, hold 5 seconds, 8-10 times. Screen-lean antidote.
- Shoulder-blade squeezes: pinch the blades together, hold 5 seconds, 10 times.
- Chest opener: hands clasped behind you, lift gently, 20-30 seconds.
- Seated figure-4: ankle on the opposite knee, sit tall, hinge forward, 20-30 seconds a side.
- Leg extensions: straighten one knee, hold 5 seconds, 10 a side.
- Wrist stretch: arm straight, fingers gently pulled back, 15 seconds each direction.
When you're up: a hip-flexor stretch (split stance or half-kneel) and calf raises. Sitting shortens the fronts of the hips; that's what makes lower backs grumble.
Chair moves ease symptoms; they don't replace moving. A daily walk and two short strength sessions a week beat any posture fix.
Tingling into a hand, weakness, or pain outlasting a week: an in-person visit.
